Invited Review on Oxide MBE of Quantum Materials Out in Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics

The invited review that former FINO Lab postdoc Gaurab Rimal (now Assistant Professor at Western Michigan) and Prof. Comes co-wrote is out in Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics! In the article, we discussed the various new techniques for synthesis of “quantum” complex oxides. Hybrid/metalorganic MBE, thermal laser epitaxy, and suboxide MBE have all opened up new ways to synthesize materials in the 4d and 5d blocks of the periodic table. These include superconducting tantalates and ruthenates, as well as topological spin-orbit coupled iridates.

It’s a very exciting time in the field and our group, where we’re seeing some really cool new results on iridates grown using metalorganic precursors. Gaurab, Tanzila Tasnim, and Jibril Ahammed have led the way on that and we’ll have a lot more to share at the APS March Meeting and arXiv postings soon.

Our work was supported by the National Science Foundation under award DMR-2045993 and the U.S. Department of Energy under award DE-SC0023478. The article is open access thanks to a “transformative agreement” between Auburn and IOP.
